Are CGC-Graded Comics Worth it? A Caveman Comics Guide

Welcome back to Comic Talk with the Caveman—where we swap the stone wheel for a slabbed grail and grunt about graded goodness! Whether you're new to comic collecting or deep into the CGC rabbit hole, you’ve probably asked yourself one thing…

Are CGC-graded comics really worth it?

Spoiler alert: they can be. But only if you know what you’re doing. So grab your club (or, y’know, your credit card), and let’s break it down like it’s a first appearance of something big.

What is CGC grading anyway?

CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) grading is the gold standard in the comic world. It locks your comic into a tamper-proof plastic slab with a grade between 0.5 and 10.0. That grade tells buyers exactly what condition your comic is in—and that’s where the money comes in.

Why it matters:

Trust. Buyers can’t always trust a seller’s “near mint” claim—but they trust CGC’s.

Protection. Slabs keep your comic safe from dust, fingerprints, and toddler disasters.

Value. A 9.8 CGC comic can be worth way more than a raw one.

When is it worth grading a comic?

Not every comic deserves a slab—don’t waste £40 on your dog-eared 1992 Superman #75. But here’s when grading makes sense:

Key issues (first appearances, deaths, variants)

High-grade modern books with 9.6+ potential

Investment books that you may want to sell later

Personal grails you want to preserve forever

Think: Amazing Spider-Man #300, Ultimate Fallout #4, or those sweet Peach Momoko variants.

What makes CGC comics sell better?

Because buyers love:

Clarity: No debate on condition

Confidence: No surprises when the post arrives

Cool factor: Let’s face it—slabs look awesome on a shelf

Plus, on platforms like eBay, CGC slabs often appear in more searches thanks to built-in keywords like “CGC 9.8” or “graded comic.”

Caveman’s tip: Buy raw, grade smart, flip later

Here’s the classic collector hustle:

1. Buy raw (cheap)
2. Press + clean (if needed)
3. Submit to CGC
4. Sell slabbed at profit—or hold for value growth

It’s not always guaranteed, but if your eye for condition is good, it can be worth it. Just beware the dreaded 9.6…
