Comic Book Bags, Boards & Boxes: The Ultimate Storage Guide
Share
Welcome to Comic Talk with the Caveman— where we club clutter and protect our paper treasures like true collectors! Whether you're hoarding Bronze Age Batman or just bagged a modern indie grail, one thing’s for sure:
Proper storage makes or breaks your collection.
Let’s get prehistoric on protecting your comics—from bags and boards to boxes and beyond.
Why Comic Storage Matters (More Than You Think)
We’re not just keeping our comics tidy—we’re:
- Preserving value (crease-free = cash-ready)
- Preventing damage (sunlight, dust, moisture, sticky toddler hands)
- Showing respect to the art and story we love
If you’re planning to keep, sell, or pass them down—storage is step one.
Bags: Plastic Protection for the Win
Polypropylene vs. Mylar:
Polypropylene – Cheap, flexible, short-term (2–5 years)
Mylar – Archival quality, crystal clear, long-term (50+ years)
Caveman's Tip: Use Mylar for keys and slab-worthy books. Poly bags are fine for bulk moderns and weekly readers.
Bag Sizes Matter:
Silver Age Bags – Most modern comics fit here better (weird, right?)
Current Size Bags – Snug, but some books wrinkle
Boards: The Backbone of Your Bag
Always acid-free and backed with purpose. Comic boards keep your books from bending like a flappy fish taco.
Standard thickness: 24pt
Premium or Fullback: 42–56pt (for long-term storage or travel)
Pro tip: Always place the glossy side toward the comic. And no, you’re not the only one who’s been doing it backwards!
Boxes: Stash Like a Savage (But Smarter)
Short Boxes – Easier to lift, great for sorting
Long Boxes – Fit more, but risk back pain and bending
Drawer Boxes – Premium option for serious collectors with shelf space
Want to go full caveman-luxe? Look for plastic archival boxes that resist moisture and last forever (like your love for Deadpool #1).
Bonus: Storage Hacks for Maximum Comic Zen
Vertical only. Never stack comics flat—it causes warping.
Cool, dark, dry. Sunlight = yellowing. Humidity = mould.
Silica gel packs. Cheap moisture control.
Labels. Sorting by character, title, or decade? Label your boxes!
